I've had this for a while but recently I've really started to wonder what it is? What I think I have is a brush for an Edison cylinder phonograph. Is that what it is and if so how should I install new bristles for the brush?

I would go to an art store and look for a camel's hair brush. Camel's hair is soft and supple. The correct color is either brown or black.The synthetic bristle ones can scratch the cylinders especially if it is wax. Make sure the bristles are at least ¾" long. Tape the bristles using Scotch magic tape. That will keep the bristles from falling out and causing a mess. Carefully pry the holder on the art brush. The taped bristles will be in one unit. Place the unit into the Edison carriage brush. Close the tabs on the carriage brush. Then remove the tape. This method can be used with other record brushes on both disk and cylinder.

Yeah, It's pretty cool, That one pictured is missing the bottom brush part though.

There was one installed on one of my Edison Standards when I got it. I'll take some good pics of it and post it up here..

To answer part of your question.....it is a "Place #2" record brush attachment. They sold for I believe $1.25. The Place company also made them for disc machine's.

I've replace the brush of my cylinder attachment similarly to Harvey's description. My wife donated a lock of hair. To hold the strands together, I worked in a little Elmer's glue to the end that gets concealed.
