Hello everyone. I have a question on this XX-IV. This has the two can motor assembly and one of the springs is broken. I was wondering what the odds were if I was to drill a new hole in the end of the spring and put it back together. The spring broke right at the end so I would not be loosing any length, only about two inches or so. Also is each can suppose to have a retainer ring to hold the lids on? Neither had one. This machine was given to me torn apart in a box and I am trying to put it back together. I would rather find a rebuilt motor set up to put in it, or at least the springs already in the cans, any ideas? I apologize for my terminology and I hope you can figure out what I am trying to ask. This is my first dealing with springs, its been driving me a little batty.

It is best to replace both springs even if only one is broken. Ron Sitko sells them at a great price. You should also make note of the direction the spring is wound in the barrel. I use a screwdriver to scribe a line on the outside of the barrel where the spring ends. This way I know how the new one should be put in. I'd suggest you read "The Compleat Talking Machine" before proceeding. Yes, it's possible to repair the springs, but there's more to it that just drilling a hole (or trying to!)

Also, since this is your first venture into the land of springs, I'd suggest you let someone with experience do it. You can send the springs and barrels off to any number of people who will repair, repack, and lubricate them properly for you. It won't be cheap, but you'll save yourself a lot of mess and aggravation.
