Best HMV Book?

I would like to learn more about HMV. I have likely missed out on some good things because of being leery of buying something labeled as an HMV knowing that so much junk is so labeled and not having a basis for determining authenticity. Is there a good book? Something like an HMV centered equivalent to Look for the Dog that is currently in print and available?

It's called "His Master's Gramophone" by Brian Oakley and Christopher Proudfoot: http://www.gramophones.uk.com/informati ... _book.html

I second that. It is an outstanding book and worth the price. Most of the pictures are in color and very clear and well done. Even if you don't have an HMV machine yet,it will guide you of what to look for.

It is the definitive work on HMV and deserves a place on every collector's bookshelf.

Yes, it is a very good book but just be aware that it does not include ALL HMV models, only those sold in the UK. As you are probably already well aware, like it's parent company, Victor, HMV sent machines half way around the world. As such none of the exported models, colonial models or those transfered to the European divisions such as Compagne Francaise Du Gramophone (itself responsible for the Spanish G & T / HMV division), are included.

The machine index is a little haphazard in my opinion and might have been better arranged chronologically but that's probably nitpicking.

Great book. Worth it for the pictures alone. An invaluable reference work.
