I emailed him the link, and have asked him to
go wind it up, play it, and see if it's any

Here's an update on what I've found out about
this machine so far:

I arranged with my brother who lives nearby
to go and have a look, and a listen to it.

Then, I made email contact with the seller.
She told me the crank is "stuck" and they
don't want to force it, so she is not sure
whether the machine plays or not, at this point.

She did add that it played ok 14 years ago
when they got it.

I wrote back explaining to her that $250 is
a price for a fully working machine, and that
since obviously this machine will require
work (and maybe expensive parts too), I asked
her if she would consider an offer somewhat
less than the full $250 price.

As far as I know "stuck crank" could be anything from simply just hard old grease
that needs to be busted loose, to something
far more sinister such as stripped gears,
wrecked pawl assembly, broken springs, broken
shaft somewhere....who knows?

The add says "good condition".

Sure, yeah, heard that before...
The old car out in the field in back is in
"good condition" too...

What do you guys think of this so far?

"Stuck Crank" can mean so many different things. Without looking inside, it could
be lots of things. Opinions? Ideas?

Trouble is, my brother could crank it up and
listen ok, but mechanically, he will not
want to be involved at all. And, it's just
too far for me to go to look at a potential
basket case. So much for "good condition" hey?

Unless there is cabinet damage unseen in the pics, I would snatch this at $250. It looks beautiful & worth the price, even if it needs 2 new springs - which I doubt, because broken springs don't feel like a "stuck crank".

I would feel like an awful cheapskate, trying to scrape anything off the $250.

preventing this machine from being able to
run properly?

To me, $250 for this machine, in this shape,
with the 67 records would be a very fair and
reasonable price if and only if it is in full
decent operating condition.

Since it is apparently not able to run for
whatever reason, it makes little difference
to me how nice the cabinet looks.

The troubles (whatever they might be) tend
to get me thinking this machine is worth a bit
less (to me that is) than the seller's asking
price.

Others obviously have their standards of value
and what's worth what.

Without knowing exactly what the internal issues are, I simply can't say for sure
what it's worth to me. Less than $250, I can
tell you that. I would happily pay the $250
for a *running* machine.

I kind of wonder if some time along the way,
somebody got at it and wound it all the way
up so darn tight, that the springs are bound
tight, clear all the way wound up?

I wonder. Any ideas out there of various
mechanical scenarios which could cause a
"stuck crank" ? I am about out of theories.

I wonder if someone wound it all the way up and turned the speed control "off"? That's something that should probably be checked. Or perhaps the Duncan Stop won't release the brake? I would pull the platter and see if the spindle rotates without it (making sure the speed control turned fully counter-clockwise).

she'll go $225 and no less.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Also, meanwhile, she has introduced a "3rd
party", who is also supposedly interested.

[Got to always love it when "the 3rd party"
gets mentioned....it never fails...]

My Bro can get over there to give it a look-see Mon. afternoon. heh-heh, it might be
all done and over with by that time...long gone... we'll see.
