Are you a disciplined collector?

I drove to Union with fellow collector and good friend Dan Melvin. In the antique shops one of us goes one way and the other takes the other side. Before we leave, each of us looks at the entire store. After I covered my half and began looking at Dan's side, I ran across a pair of late Nipper salt & pepper shakers that were only $5. Could you resist a pair of lonely $5 Nippers? I couldn't resist. Back in the truck I kidded Dan and told him I wan't very pleased with him and showed him the Nippers. He said he saw them and walked right by them. What would you do? Can you pass up another nice mahogany "L" door XVI or pair of Nipper salt & pepper shakers? Jerry

For $5? I couldn't pass those up! I guess that's why I have a growing shelf of them...

I wouldn't want two Nippers. But if Nipper was the salt shaker and the Improved Gramophone was the pepper (or vice versa) - that I would want to have.

Trust me Brandon, when your shelves are full, and you have no more room for more shelves, you'll pass them up.

My new criteria for buying, is to ask myself if 1 year from now, I'll even remember that I own this new purchase.

I think over the years I have become a disciplined collector. I buy only mint machines and mint records. Room is a problem for me. Of coarse, there's always that deal you can't turn down. Like my Victor 4 at 650.00. Not mint and needs restoring.

The term "collector" automatically implies - "OCD and no discipline" (even if you think you are disciplined)... :)
A truly disciplined person wouldn't buy any of this stuff...

When I first started to collect, I would buy what ever was cool looking and cheap. Now, room is an issue. I go only for the smaller items. However, something as small as %5.00 set of Nippers, I would get those, too. They would make a great gift to a beginning collector, or to sell at a show.

It is amazing the discipline that a lack of money and space will impose!

I think I'm somewhat disciplined:

I don't buy something unless I want it… :P
