Was Popeye The Sailor Man ever recorded on a 78 rpm record? I have the Woody Woodpecker song on a red label Columbia. I'm just curious.

They were issued here in the UK too. I have the following in my collection, and there may have been more issued:
Rex 8536 - I'm Popeye the sailor man/Blow the man down
Rex 9172 - The teddy bears' picnic/Let's all sing like the birdies sing
Rex 9238 - The man on the flying trapeze/On the good ship Yacki-hicki-doola
Rex 9314 - Barnacle Bill the sailor/The merry-go-round broke down
Billy Costello was also issued on at least two Imperials, earlier than the above records. Some of the vocalising on those is similar to the Popeye voice.
These are the UK Imperial and Rex labels, part of the Crystalate company here in Kent (not the US labels of the same name).

Thanks for the info. I, too have a Billy Costello record, I think it's a Regal. The songs are Let's All Sing Like The Birdies Sing, and Barnacle Bill The Sailor. The Barnacle Bill song had a dialogue with a woman who sounds like Olive Oyl. I have to start hunting for these records, now.

Isn't the Popeye tune actually called (or a variation of) "College Hornpipe"? I have College Hornpipe on a Regina disc and it sounds just like the Popeye tune.

It is in fact not "College Hornpipe", but actually a similar song called "Sailor's Hornpipe".
