I picked this Edison A100 up last year and finally got around to making room to bring it upstairs and be able to play it. The machine is in very nice condition and has what it believe is a factory installed 31 record cabinet on the lower shelf. I have only seen one other like it. If anyone has any information on the cabinet please let me know.

Nice machine, but that's not a factory installed record cabinet. These were aftermarket items available from dealers, but made by companies other than Edison. You can see ads for some of these cabintes in issues of The Talking Machine World, which is available online.

This particular A-100 has an unusual record storage box that I believe is original from the factory. The hardware, construction, green felt record separators for up to 32 diamond discs, wood, veneer and stain nicely match the A-100 cabinet. Dimensions are 13¼" wide by 12¼ high and 13¼ deep. The base of this cabinet which extends to the edge of the cabinet's bottom shelf is held by brass flathead screws. I have found some literature that makes reference to this self-contained storage box designed for the A-100. This is similar to the Sheraton 38 record drawer. More research is required to confirm.

Just because it's on a website means nothing, Rich. I have my hands full with my job and other projects right now and I don't have time to dig around TMW archives to find examples of these ads, but if you go look on the archive.org website and pull up some 1913-1915 TMW issues, you will see these cabinets advertised by smaller companies that made them for DD machines. I have never seen any period Edison ads for these anywhere.

Hopefully someone else can ideintify the maker, I just don't have that kind of time to dig these days.

It looks good with the machine. I wish I had one in oak.

Edison made storage albums for these, but AFAIK did not made cabinets. The albums are uncommon.

Note, too, that the record file is not made of mahogany. It is quite obviously made of birch solids stained in imitation of mahogany. It matches wonderfully well, though.

I'd certainly consider the record file to be a good deal mordesirable than the machine which it fits. After all, the A-100 Maxine is common as dirt, but these cabinets turn up very seldom. I've had eleven or twelve A-100 machines pass through my hands over the years, but have never had the chance to own on of those record files.

It is a beautiful phonograph and would be an excellent addition to just about any phonograph collection. Congratulations! CDB

Thanks for confirming, George. I didn't think to do a search here, then again, I was supposed to be doing my job at work but it did all sound familiar to me. I knew I'd seen ads for them in the TMW.
