I'm thinking that the artist was predicting the future...

To me the device looks like a melodeon of some sort, using perforated cardboard discs. I know I've seen machines like this-maybe at a Stanton's auction.
I had to look twice to see that the dog was a live one, posing with the picture! Bob

Those organettes were sold almost entirely in Europe, I think the child is probably German.

It's a german ARIOSA organette.

Not so rare here in Italy...
