He calls it a "Victorla Record Player", I guess it must be a British make from the reign of Queen Victorla. And he's offering the record for sale on eBAY after that demonstration!

I say the same: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
It's strange that he didn't understand that something was wrong!
He probably understood it when he looked on the record after playing it...

LOL, I love how all the comments are quick to yell at the owner.

The owner of the "Victorla" might have gotten better sound out of the Edison DD if only he had propped his feet up onto the soundbox. The additional weight would have caused the steel needle to dig more deeply into the delicate record grooves, leading to a fuller and richer sound experience.

Although... I did do a little "test" quite some time ago with a broken/warped/cracked Edison DD and an "unknown" vertical phonograph.

Yes it is disturbing to us who know the difference in the way in which records were played. But even after quite some time I didn't realize some issues that kept me from playing some very nice old Pathé records I had picked up. I got rid of them thinking they didn't work, but now I know it was the adjustment on the Brunswick arm that was causing them to "skate". If your not involved with others that are "experts" on the topic I can see how the ordinary person who has no clue could easily think "hey its a phonograph record it should work". Not too long ago in fact I passed on a bunch of edison records offered of very good titles because the fellow mentioned he also had a machine for sale. He also commented he had played all of the records and they sounded great. When I checked his listings I saw a Victor Upright. On contacting him he say indeed he had played all the edisons on it. Live and Learn. I canceled my bid, but others didn't realize, I hope they were happy with what they got, but I wasn't taking any chances. Too many records bad out here all ready.

I saw your video, good the DD was broken cracked and warped...
BTW, have you found out what company that made the vertical phonograph?

I know all too well what a disaster this could be. I bought last year a lot of well over 200 disc and a machine. Who ever owned it knew good hot tunes when they heard them and the boxes were full of them, many electric. However they nearly all had been played part or all the way with a diamond that was chipped and turning the grooves brown. I was able to salvage some of them and just suffer though the sad sound in places, but it could have been a wonderful find if only the person would have know what they were doing..
