If all Victor 1 cabinets were in the standard format that is commonly seen, then how do you explain this Victor 1 cabinet which definitely has larger base moldings that normal? Who is to say that Victor NEVER made variations? I don't think it is a safe assumption to say "NEVER"...

Could the ID tag be replaced?

Curt, I hate to be rude. However, I have to ask.....do you own any books on the subject of Phonographs...???. If you did, you would know that a Victor 1 was later changed in style of case, motor and turntable size. Try buying a copy of "look for the dog". That may be a great help to you.
I can't understand why you are now adding (from a previous thread) the "early" (as your heading states)Victor 1 thread pics to this. I don't think George or myself ever stated there were no "later" variations. However, again.....the last thread you posted was regarding the "early" Victor 1.

Personally I make it a point to never say "never."

The Victor Data Book shows ten variations of the Victor I. The empty cabinet you showed in your post above is the style first introduced in 1909.

In looking over the first thread on this topic (http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=18236), I don't see where anyone claimed that "all Victor cabinets were in the standard format" or that "Victor NEVER made variations." Quite the opposite, in fact.

The cabinet that you showed was from a later Victor I. In 1909, Victors I - III switched to the later style cabinet with the wider molding. These cabinets with variations lasted until the end of the Victor Horned machines. The Victor Data book shows all the variations. One thing I would like to say is there is no need for bashing another member of the Forum because some one made a mistake. None of us are perfect and know everything. We need to encourage each other so all can learn.

I will say this as politely as I can - You may hate to be rude, but you like to be arrogant and condescending. Not just to me, although your recent reply to my question - "You need to look at the label a little more.....here's a hint....$22.00. There is even more on that label. As I wrote already.....I believe the "buyer" knew what they were talking about. Bottom line.....just junk what's left.... ." - along with your reply today, does seem a bit condescending.

How about the guy who is new to collecting and inquired about his desire to restore a Canadian VV 4-3? Remember your reply: "The most honest suggestion would be to use this machine for parts. Mind you there doesn't seem to be many good parts left to salvage. Given the long list of problems against it and the cost factor in order to restore.....just makes it not worth messing with in my opinion." Your "opinion" was based on the potential value of his machine and since he wasn't asking about value, your reply definitely came across as arrogant and not helpful...

Of course, I own phonograph books and have "Look For The Dog"... Maybe you are unaware that many things have been discovered since that book was written and new machines have been found that no one knew existed and are not in books. Books are a guide, but not the ultimate source of knowledge and no one with any sense who collects these things thinks of themselves as infallible experts. Tim and George have done an excellent job with their books, but I am sure that they would be the first to admit that they have not covered all possibilities of everything that exists.

I admit that I may be more inquisitive than you and I might pose questions that you think are irrelevant - so, if you don't like them, then don't answer them...

Thanks Curt - - no offense taken. Most all of us are trying to find answers to questions. Helping each other discover these answers is the purpose of this forum. And a little kindness helps grease the hinges of our interactions.
