This thing is stuck and I don't want to force anything apart. I think the right side with the gear should slide off and underneath has has a pin going through the spindle that fits in a slot on the gear. If so it is seriously stuck in place. Once off I think the barrels slide off or at least one does. On the left side it looks like the barrel cover should come off without having to remove anything (but how to nudge the cover from the barrel?)to allow inspection/removal of spring. Does the run trough some other parts? Any suggestions how to take this apart with out bending anything? Help and suggestions needed. If I try to force with pressure which part should be be applied to and with what to avoid causing harm?

I've had a few stuck on. I got 2 wooden wedges and slid them between the 2 gears. Put them opposite each other on the flat spots with the rivets. Tap the shaft with a rubber mallet and tap the wedges in till the gear pops off. Usually when I tap the shaft the cover pops on the other side too. Good luck

That worked and here's what was inside after cleaning (less the springs). Regarding the stud on the shafts for holding the inner end of the spring does anyone know if those are simply press fit and if they can be tapped on to make them extend out further as to hold the spring with a higher degree of certainty when reassmebled?

I think they were put in and then squeezed. I guess you can tap them out a bit. Just make sure it is not loose and will not pull out. I usually put in a new rivet if I feel it is worn or too small. Ron Sitko has them.
