The Other Bush & Lane Duo-Vox

Post by CDBPDX »

Some time ago, I bought a bunch of old phonographs (35 or so) that had been stored in a barn for 15 years or more. I still have several of these and one of them is a Bush & Lane Duo-Vox with no reproducers and a really weathered cabinet. I drug it out today and installed the spare lateral Duo-Vox reproducer and cranked it up. It seems to work great. Not surprising considering the monster motor that powers it. The phono compartment is in good condition cosmetically.

You can watch it play on YouTube:

Enjoy!

I believe this B & L machine is earlier than the other one I have, the bigger walnut one with the Heineman motor. I'm thinking the Heineman motor was a proven and probably cheaper motor than this sealed motor by United Mfg. & Distributing Co of Chicago, though it is not as quiet, and they opted for the less expensive motor.

This motor is model No.7. Has anybody seen their motors 1 through 6? And what machines were they powering? I recall seeing pictures over the years of motors similar to this but I failed to assign any of the details to a brain cell so I can't remember where I saw them, except that it was probably on eBay.

Unfortunately, the cabinet exterior is pretty trashed having shared accommodation with livestock for 15 years or so, but the interior looks good. I cleaned up part of the top of the cabinet and it looks like the original finish would make any piano maker proud, unfortunately, it is really damaged. The interior fared much better, though. And the motor is a monster!
