Does anyone have an idea of the value of the black 5 inch Lambert? I have looked, and can't find much on them. I think the are more rare than the pink ones.

It's difficult to compare prices of two things which are rare, as they come up infrequently. However from my experience the pink ones will fetch about 1.5 to 2 times the black, and if they have the original boxes this adds another dimension. A rather tatty unboxed black Lambert concert went for over 600 pounds at auction here last year.

The pink concerts were sold from about July/August 1903 using white celluloid stock coated with pink dye on the outer surface until about October 1903. Then the white stock began to be dyed black, as were the standard sizes. By October 1904 black celluloid stock was used, and the company folded by late 1905, filing for bankruptcy in January 1906. However I don't think they were terribly active in late 1905, and concert records were not bought in huge numbers anyway, so the sales figures of these records was tiny in the overall scheme of things.

They produced some 119 concert size titles (there are blanks in the list), many of which came from British Edison Bell masters, presumably using moulds taken from Edison Bell's own concert size range. My pink concerts carry an April 1903 master date, while the black ones carry dates between April and September 1903. Due to litigation from Edison, Lambert only recorded a tiny number of tunes after the end of the pink era (ending october 1903), these reusing catalogue numbers, selling earlier recordings to the end of their business. This was a very sad end for a plucky and innovative company, the innovations from which spawned the huge indestructible businesses of Indestructible, US Everlasting and, of course, Edison's blue Amberol.
