Just thought I'd link this for anyone that may be interested in a very decent looking example. I can't tell if it's a Model A, B or C which would have used the Gem motor instead of the superior Fireside motor of the Model D.

The only hint is that Frow shows a picture of the "X" in "Edison Cylinder Phonograph Companion" and it clearly shows the same two shiny screws that this one has in the front corners of the bedplate, whereas the picture Frow shows of the D-X does not.

Judging by the flat shank crank I'd say it has the Fireside motor, not the modified Gem. Bob

Ah, thank you, Bob. That would make sense, wouldn't it? I wonder if Mr. Frow used the same D-X for both pictures...the two pictures are taken from differing perspectives, but other than the two screw heads I mentioned, they look identical.

It wasn't Mr. Frow, it was Mr. Sefl who made the photographs - here in the US and mainly of machines from his own collection.

As a side note, the Frow book's shots of the Standard F and the extremely rare G seem to be of the same machine, because the G's case was in such poor shape that Al just temporarily switched the G's mech to the nicer looking F cabinet for the purpose of making a more attractive photo for the book. This led, decades later, to a researcher concluding that there is no such thing as a Standard G because the Frow book's example is faked. Good thing good ole Al was still around to straighten that out.

OK, but I only said he used them, not that he took them.

Did Frow neglect to credit Sefl, I don't see anything mentioned in my copy (2nd. printing)?
