After a long search for belting that would work on my phonograph restorations, I had to bite the bullet and get some custom cut. Hand sourced leather has good stretch, and excellent strength and pliability. Laser cut to exactly 7/32" wide, and just under 1/16" thick, this leather belt is STRAIGHT, has no bends or radius to it, and with its 90-degree cut edges it tracks in pulleys perfectly. My search was sparked by a need to find an excellent belt material for the high RPM governors on Class-M machines, and also one that would flex easily enough to alow Edison GEM machines to play at their best (especially the Model D Gem). And the color is a nice classy natural tan.

Gently pre-stretchall leather belts before fitting them. The best technique is to use a super sharp razor to create lapping surfaces bout ¼" long, and apply a drop of wood glue or white glue to the area, and clap together (gently, enough to hold joint together) with Vice Grips. The Vice Grips also leave a nice ladder pattern in the leather which looks professinal. When I get my website finished (labor or love) I will post detiled instructions with video.

While we are on the subject of leather belting, and
in particular, the subject of ordering it cut at some
desired width:

What might the cost be of ordering up some belting
cut at a width of .4 inches?

This seems to be generally used on the dictation machines.
Shavers in particular. Just wondering if it might
be cost-effective to get some of that cut?
