I need an original reproducer and a horn cradle for a type D zono like the one pictured. It's hard to tell from the picture which one I need (what came on it was a Sonora "homemade" long throat)so if you know which reproducer this is, please let me know if you have one and how much.

It could be a Zonophone Concert V. These are very tough to find.

And extremely expensive if you do find one. An incomplete one sold recently for over $900 on eBay. Good Luck!!

What is shown on this machine is a Concert-V reproducer...., which is fine, but actually late. If your Zonophone-D had a "humpback" motor with the larger (3.5 inch) crank that went directly into the motor board, not through the case, a Concert-V would be more appropriate. The prices for these as mentioned are high. Even the reproductions that used to be made by Mirek Stehlick in Canada are bringing $300-400. They were about $150 when he was making them.

The correct reproducer for this machine, as these are early, is a "closed face" reproducer. There were two types (with variations.) The closed metal face could be attached to the reproducer by either 3 or 4 screws. There was usually a needle bar guard, but not always. These reproducers, when available, can approach $2000 if correct and complete! (Sorry!!!) I don't have a file photo, but I am sure that someone could snap a quick photo for you!

Also, there are reproduction horn cradles available. You can find them on eBay. MOST Zonophones these days have reproduction cradles. This does not detract from the machine.

Here's a later "humpback" Zonophone Ds as found with a closed face sound box. The thread is 3 pages long, and there are photos of the machine after cleanup.

This has the 3 screw version without the needle bar guard. I forgot to mention that reproductions of a 4 screw version without a needle bar guard were made in the '70's. They are excellent! The only way to really tell the difference between an original and a reproduction, as these would have some patina by now, is how the needle bar attaches to the diaphragm, and the screws look too new and like they have been patinated with "gun blue."

Thanks for all the help. I was afraid that the reproducer would be a challenge, but the machine was just too cool to pass up. I found an ummarked long throat reproducer that I put on it. It looks okay, but would like to find a original of course. Here's some pics of it.

By the way, is the "closed face" zono the same reproducer as the Berliner?

No, they're similar, but with subtle differences. One similarity is that they both sound pretty crappy!
