I wonder where the suitcase portable for this motor went to? Maybe the suitcase portable has the Zonophone motor cobbled on to it!?

I feel just the opposite. We have to remember machine's like these were worthless at one point. Therefore, for someone to go through the hassle of keeping working is very surprising.

Normally, this would have been tossed out.

and the replacement job was not badly done- even retained the original turntable.

Yes, it's sad to see something like this. But then again, I think this was done many years ago, possible during the Depression. People had an attitude of "Make Do, Renew". "Do without, Throw it Out". My Grandmother used to say that all the time.
