Looks like the wrong crank handle but closer inspection reveals wrong motor and obviously wrong reproducer.

How can you tell the motor's wrong?

I thought a long-throat exhibition was an option on these, or at least it
could have been upgraded to one, no?

Agreed the crank is wrong, but the motor and reproducer are correct. Most Victor R's came with a long throat Exhibition. If it was very early than a Exhibition Jr. or Concert. It would be hard to do anything with the motor, but the screws indicate its correct.

later version without the record hold down- the cast iron plate on this would make changing the motor a real chore

This machine was in an auction in Seattle, WA. A buddy of mine was going to bid on, but I told him the faults. Except for the crank, everything on it is correct. It's hard to tell if the thumbscrew is missing or broken off. The dealer tag is a nice touch. It gives the machine personality.

This R is in very rough condition and as far as I know did not sell.

It's more than likely the consignee now trying to sell it. Even the Vic.O did not sell. The reserves were way to high for the condition of the machines (all very poor). However, this is only my opinion.... ;).

I'm having a problem figuring this out. How can I get a look at the catalog for this auction? What am I missing?

Mike, the auction in Seattle was last weekend. I was there for the preview. This is when I inspected the machine (s) .... ;). Now this R is listed on Ebay.

Okay, so what was wrong with it aside from the crank and poor condition of the horn support arm?

I'm surprised at the price when compared to previous sales of this model on ebay...

Well, lets see....all the oxidized parts were very well worn. All the nickel parts on the tone arm were just rust (therefore, not even good for parts). The motor was very well worn (much like the whole machine).
The horn was rusty and in poor condition, the wood was dry and poor..... etc, etc..... Almost like a real "barn find".

It was a lot of money for a nice dealer celluloid plate..... .

I think the auction was expecting North of $900. It did not make that even on Ebay.
