replace cylinder cabinet pegs or not?

It seems that every cylinder record cabinet I find is missing the pegs. It is also true that all my records are in boxes. I have usually just put them in the drawers still in the boxes and never bothered to replace the pegs. Seems kind of silly to put pegs in and then have to store the boxes. What do the rest of you do?

Dave,

As I recently mentioned in a thread on a cabinet I acquired a week ago, I have more pegged cabinet storage than I need. I've gotten to the point where I don't like to separate original boxes/lids from the appropriate records if everything is in nice condition. On the other hand, storing records on pegs with airflow around them is really the best way to keep them mold-free. But then, if the area is climate-controlled (air conditioned/heated) and the records/boxes are currently mold-free, they shouldn't deteriorate if kept together.

I guess it all depends upon the condition of the records, boxes/lids, and whether they're matching. At least that's what guides my decisions. :)

Those pegs which were fitted in storage cabinets are responsible for the loss and/or destruction of hundreds (possibly thousands) of original cylinder boxes which the original owners discarded. As a result, there are far more cylinders surviving than there are boxes for them.

I keep my cylinders in the manufacturers boxes as far as possible, but like most collectors I have a number of cylinders which have lost their boxes. Replica BA boxes were available in the UK some years ago, but have long since disappeared from the market.

If you replaced the pegs in your cabinet you would then have to find somewhere to store the redundant boxes. I would leave the cabinet as it is.

I must say i'm mixed on this subject. I like to keep cylinders in there original but I also like the look of cylinders on the pegs in the cabinets. So I must say I do both. I display my early brown and black cylinders on pegs for both looks and as mentioned to prevent mold. I also have cabinets with the clips on the bottom of the drawers to hold the cylinders in thier box. Lastly I like barrister bookcase for both storage and display of cylinders and other small phonograph items.

My Amberola 1A came with no clips in the drawers and I have found it more practical to keep it that way. My one cylinder cabinet came with clips and again, I have kept it that way, though at the moment I don't have cylinders in it. I've never owned a cabinet with pegs.

Perhaps you could restore pegs in one drawer and leave the others as is. That would let you display it as originally intended but also give you more room for storage in the other drawers.

I would add that it would depend on the platform missing the pegs. If it a pull, or swing, out shelf, then i would replace the missing pegs because there is nothing on the sides to contain the boxes when the shelf is moved. If it is a drawer with sides, then cylinder boxes are contained and work fine.

Phonophan sells very nice pegs and caps. You can buy rubber number stamp sets and ink pad for little money to give the original look. Search the forum for Herzog restoral thread I started where you can see the pegs from Phonophan and get some hints on assembly.

I don't believe Tim sells these anymore. About 2 years ago when I needed about 200 or more of the pegs I contacted Tim and he politely informed me that he no longer carries them. I mentioned in the post initiated by George P. here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=20118 regarding his recently purchased cylinder cabinet with swing out shelves that he could obtain pegs from Jim Reisenweber in PA. Jim is the only person I could find back then that made the cylinder cabinet pegs and I ordered a bunch of them. His prices were reasonable and the pegs he made up for me were well done. I have no clue whether he still makes them but I'm pretty confident that Tim (Phonophan) no longer has them but, again, that was as of 2 years ago.
