Edison Experts Needed

I obtained this suitcase Home recently and am wondering about what I actually have. The cabinet lid has no red banner and appears to be the original finish with no evidence of one ever having been there. I have had differing opinions on the originality of the drawer. Factory or cut later? What is this - any ideas...?

It's very interesting. The drawer and inner construction of the cabinet appear very old. The mechanism is not that early for a suitcase Home. Has this machine been through the hands of a previous collector? Is it possible that you have a very early cabinet with a slightly later mechanism? Regardless, I like it. Jerry Blais

The drawer is not the same dimensions as those on the very earliest cabinets. The mechanism dates from October 1899 - - 3 years after the drawer-type Home cabinets were discontinued. It's possible that the original owner liked the idea of having a handy drawer (much like that of the Spring-Motor Phonograph), but didn't particularly like the looks of a florid decal on the lid of his Phonograph, so he took the bull by the horns...
Looks like he didn't stop there either, and had the machine converted to 2/4 minute a few years later.
I'd be interested in seeing a photo of the small end of the brass horn that shows the seam!

If the drawer is anything but a factory job, then it was the work of a real craftsman. In either case, this is a keeper!

I like the case!
Anyone notice the speed control? Why all the extra brass fittings topside? Below the bedplate looks normal.

The back of the drawer does not look factory. Edison usually had a dove tail joint in the back of the drawers. It's still a great feature to have regardless if it is factory or not! In the drawer is a spare feed screw nut!
