Victor Type E - Noisy Motor

I have recently purchased a Victor Type E. The motor, however, is extremely loud. What piece in the motor needs to be replaced? or what can I do to make the motor silent?

It's hard to say with just the information provided, could you elaborate on what type of sound the motor is making?

As a long time collector once told me....
"it's like trying to make a VW bug run quiet. It's just not going to happen". I guess you can try and adjust the governor gear a little. However, it's just inherent with these early spur/bevel gear motors.

There are a couple of things you can try, assuming it's a standard bevel gear motor. You can adjust the "backlash" or free play in the governor gear. These motors have one governor mounting screw that can be adjusted, moving the gear closer or further from the driving gear. You can also check the wear and play between the main spur and bevel gear. That's the part that gets the most wear. If they look worn, you might try a replacement from some of the parts suppliers. As Gramophone78 points out however, these motors are inherently noisy. It sounds very similar to a train on train tracks.

Agreed...these motors are just inherently noisy. I have found the same noise on my early style VV-IV and VV-VI machines which use the motors in the external horn machines. I did make it run a little quieter by adjusting the governor, but really its something I learn to live with on these early machines. Basically, it is normal.
I also found the motor on my Talk-O-Phone I used to have to be noisy.
