I am working on my Gem serial number G145780 which has a 3/16" crane socket. Does anyone know when the ¼" crane socket was introduced? I am trying to figure out if this should have 10" cone horn or the Gem morning glory horn. I am wondering if the ¼" socket came at the same time as the Edison morning glory crane

If George P could tell me a born-on date, that would be very helpful!

The chance must have been during the B series of Gems. I talked with Harvey and his B takes the smaller crane while my B takes the larger size rod. I hope this helps. Jerry

Well, I think the best course will be to wait and see if George will be able to give me a date of manufacture. I was reading in Edison Phonograph Monthly that dealers were required to provide the new morning glory horns even on older machines still in stock. I wonder what they did with the old 14" horns? I suppose the factory took them back.

Gem No.145780 left the factory about January 1906.

Jerry's right in that the change in socket size occurred during the run of the Model B. However, keep in mind that the Model B was in production simultaneously with the Model C - - right up into 1908. The 19" Gem horns were introduced in 1907.

So, it looks like my Gem probably was sold with a 10" cone horn or an aftermarket type of horn, not the Edison Gem morning glory horn. Thanks so much for the information.

And for what it's worth, Gem No.202983 left the factory about November 1906, so evidently the socket size had nothing to do with the larger horn equipment! That surprises me...

Also, I apologize for my earlier inaccurate size for the larger Gem horns - - they are 19".

I have 2 key wind gems that have different crane mounting hole diameters. i think one still has the crane the other I don't remember---they are both buried behind a few machines, can't get to them as of yet.

Something to consider for any Gem is one of Stephen Madara's wonderful glass horns. He has a wonderful selection of colors as well as transparent and translucent finishes. I had DeeDee pick out the horn of her choice and it was nice to involve her in my hobby. OK, I had hopes of the Gem living upstairs but it's in the basement. Jerry Blais

I second that - a maroon Gem with a nice cranberry glass horn from Stephen,,, it doesn't get any better than that Jerry
