While aimlessly roaming the house today I noticed these three machines and the way they were lined up: Sonora Grand, Victor VV-90 and the Vivatonal 613. Large - medium - small. Wonder how the original cost worked out. I really can't wait for spring.

That's one gorgeous Sonora! If you feel like posting some more photos of that, I'm sure some of us would love to see them. Cabin fever, yeah, I think many of us can relate. I can't wait to be able to get outside and work.

What finish is the Victrola - looks like Flemish or English Oak ?

I have the hulk of a Sonora "Mae West" that I literally pulled out of a dumpster... it's been squirreled in the back for the garage for nearly 15 years now...

I would like to see more images of each machine !

Thanks - I spent at least a month bringing the Sonora back from a basket case. I had to completely strip and completely redo the finish on the Sonora and major work on the right front leg. Except for the inside of the lid everything was stripped, stained, Sprayed using a HVLP spray system with 3 coats of aniline tinted shellac (home made 1-lb cut), sanded between coats - three coats of aniline tinted or clear lacquer - wet sanded between coats and then hand rubbed to the final finish..... as with all the machines I have restored (bought in some cases for peanuts)the final objective besides cabinet veneer repair is always to match the outside finish to the finish on the inside of the lid. I have a nice collection of alcohol and oil soluble aniline dyes.

Quite frankly I'm not sure what species Oak this VV-90 is. Perhaps someone can identify it.

I don't know what the options were for this machine... it is not the Golden Oak such as my 1918 XI...


I'm guessing "fumed oak" or English Oak. I believe Flemish oak was REALLY dark...

Whatever the the flavor, that is beautiful figuring in the veneer.

I believe the finish on the Victrola is either a Weathered Oak, or possibly a Flemish Oak. The machine is actually a VV X, not a VV 90. The crescent shaped speed control identifies it. Nice machine. I like that finish.

Awesome job on the Sonora. Does anyone know of or have the model Sonora like yours with the wooden tone arm option? I would like to see some pictures of one. I have two smaller model Sonoras in Walnut and Mahogany with the wooden tone arm.
