Thankyou David for posting this clip, which was not broadcast in the BBC West of England Region where we would have been unaware of it's existence.

It should be compulsory viewing for those prophets of doom who would have us believe that the only people interested in our hobby are old men in sheds. Here is the proof that our collections will live on in caring hands.

LOL! "Oh my god, look at the size of that one!" the lady exclaims. And she wasn't referring to the gentleman's shed either. I watched that clip patiently waiting for the appearance of a shed but was very disappointed not to see a single example.

Thanks for the YouTube link. You'll notice that out of that 8 minute segment, we get a mere few minutes of CP and his vast collection but we get more time with the guy with the "recording lathe in my bedroom" (and I thought I was strange) who cuts records with analogue tape and then the ladies who deejay with ELECTRICALLY amplified sound from 102 ACOUSTIC portables! Is the irony also lost in the process?

Well, apparently "young people are into analogue records". I wonder if this statement is referring to the current vinyl fad where most new LP' are cut using DIGITAL files? There is precious little analogue in the process of making most modern records. But I'm being pedantic.

Anyway, it is hopeful that there are some people out there who might continue this appreciation for the vintage technology when most of us have long gone. I'm not especially convinced that those who "dress up in vintage clothes" on weekends are particularly the same kind of people who will seriously collect the records and machines though. Where I work I often see a lot of people dressed up in vintage clothes but that's probably not through choice!

I suspect Lewis got more airtime because Kitty, Daisy and Lewis are an upcoming band, currently in the middle of a tour of the UK and Europe. Plus a vinyl cutting lathe links into the "vinyl revival" - an over-hyped thing itself, but like it or not, a more popular subject at the moment than 78s.

I think the most important thing is that it was portrayed as fun, and something to be valued and interested in rather than as something naff or to be laughed at. Plus it was on prime-time BBC One (albeit a regional programme), not tucked away on BBC Four.

I agree that few "normal" people are going to collect tens or hundreds of machines and thousands of records, but if some people think "I'd like one of those", that's great. It's a shame the first horn machines they find will be crapophones, but at least they've seen what real horn gramophones look like, and that portable gramophones are worth having too.
