Question About Victor Elbows

I am helping a fellow Forum member try to find a horn for his late Zonophone. The Zonophone is about the size of a Victor II or III. Will a #19 Victor Flower horn fit in his slide in elbow? Thanks for any help. Jerry Blais

Gosh Jer, it sure would be helpful to see the machine, or at least the elbow itself!? Some of these late machines were very inexpensively made, and had back brackets and tone arms like Oxfords. The horns for these actually had the cut out for a pin that was inside the back bracket, not the other way around. There was no elbow!
In another forum post there was a picture of a European, post-Victor acquisition back mount Zonophone phonograph with a Victor style petaled all black horn. The elbow has the slot on the TOP, not the bottom. The horn actually has a threaded protrusion that goes into the slot, and then there is a knurled thumb screw to hold it in place. If this is what your buddy has, a Victor horn should work I think, but you obviously would not want a Nipper decal on it! Although, it would be on the bottom of the horn because of where the slot on the elbow would be.
Again, a photo is worth a thousand words..., or at least as many as I have posted here!

Yes, a photo would really help. The photo in the other thread is of a machine similar to his but not his actual machine. He asked about my #19 horn and it would be a very expensive gamble to send my horn from Oregon to Florida to try it out. I was quote $90 by UPS for the trip. Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,
Some pics of Zonophone rear mount. First pic one with slide in elbow. Must have been soldered since a brass horn. The rest of
the pics of an Oxford that I assume is made by Zonophone. My horn for it is waiting to get get repainted. I'm not expert but I don't think a Victor slide in elbow would work.

The Oxford style combined elbow and back bracket pictures are very useful. See the pin at 12 o'clock inside the round "elbow?" This fits into a slot cut into the horn, not the other way around. There were inexpensive Zonophones made with this back bracket.
The other photo is of a Zonophone made back bracket. The elbows for these horns are all push in. They are all soldiered unto the horn. In order for a Victor horn to work at all, Jer's friend has to have a Victor back bracket. I have owned many American made pre-Victor and post-Victor Zonophones. I have never had one that came with a Victor back bracket? That is why I wondered about whether it was European Zonophone or not.
Regards,
Jeff

Beautiful machine! If I were you I would NEVER repaint that horn. If you want, clean it up with some GoJo hand cleaner NO pumice and a soft cloth.

I think this is a UK Zonophone. So, you may want to ask the guys on the other side of the pond in our UK & European section...

That horn looks gorgeous to me. I most definitely would not paint it!
