Learning resources for restoring/repairing wood finishes?

Post by pedalpoint »

What are your favourite, or most useful, resources that you've found for repairing or restoring wood finishes?

I've got a few books on wood finishing, including the fabulous Flexner on Finishing book. But I'm realizing that repairing old finishes is a different art.

Just a follow-up (in case someone else comes across this post later on)...

In Eric Reiss' book, The Compleat Talking Machine, he recommends this book on restoring furniture:
The Furniture Doctor by George Grotz.

Hello

I have referred to Bob Flexner's book many times and found it to be very useful. He talks about the chemistry of finishes and refinishing various woods. He is very knowledgeable and spends a lot of time debunking myths perpetrated by the refinishing and paint sales industry.

"Understanding Wood Finishing - How to select and apply the right finish"

If you are interested in coloring new wood, etc, I suggest you look at ticktockpro.com
He has an excellent course there on clock case restoration. All the same principles apply to other objects and furniture. You can see a preview video on line too.
