The Talking Machine Forum — For All Antique Phonographs & Recordings

I recently found this gadget, which I know is an early device to add a start/stop or automatic brake feature to machines that did not have one. But that's about all I know, aside from that this device appears in a couple of the Fabrizio/Paul books. The condition is pretty great. I was wondering whether anyone might have any more information about this. I was thinking I'd just sell it, but I may instead try to use it on an early XVI I have.

Other than the information in on page 136 of A World of Antique Phonographs, what more information do you need?

Here's the first ad of which I'm aware. It appeared in the June 1912 issue of The Talking Machine World.
Advertisements for the Simplex appeared in each issue of the Talking Machine World from June through November 1912. Here's the one (Oct.) we used as a frontispiece in Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gimmicks:
The body of the Simplex was cast from white metal which does not seem to have expanded like so much of the stuff did, but it's prone to breakage. The arm of mine was broken when I bought it, and I repaired it. I see that your example has also been repaired, and quite professionally.

that's exactly what I was looking for. unfortunately world of antique phonographs is one of just two of your books that I don't have.
