Kathleen Ferrier

Kathleen Ferrier, in my opinion the greatest English singer of her generation, was born on this day in 1912. Her warm luminous contralto is one of those voices which is so individual that it cannot be mistaken for anyone else.

Her short but brilliant recording career spanned the transition from 78 to LP until her tragically early death on 8th October 1953, and the large number of subsequent CD reissues are a testament to her lasting popularity.

Very many thanks for this Roger---a super thought to remember her today---she is a heroine of mine too. What magnificent courage she displayed at her last concert. Her performances, as you suggest, are immortal.

Your photo is wonderful and here also is one of my favourites which I have framed on the wall at home.

Happy Birthday Kathleen ! Impossible to believe 103 years ago.............

No disrespect to Ms. Ferrier, but my favorite Orfeo (Gluck) is Shirley Verrett: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwDoXvwk9G0

You're very welcome! There is (or was? things change...) a 2-CD set of the complete opera, with Verrett, Anna Moffo, and Judith Raskin: RCA Victor 7896-2-RG. Highly recommended!
