that's definitely a most unfortunate sight... and it's been refinished, ugh (meaning the painted accents on the doors are gone as well).

with some work, though, you may be able to bring it back... it does still have its id plate, after all... the 8-8 uses a lot of the same basic components (including motor and motor board) of the 8-9, although the hardware should be antique bronze. you could probably create your own rear panel, which doubles as a tray. it uses an all metal horn that was incorporated in a few other machines, including the 8-35.

I have one of these, and it started with the purchase of a completely gutted cabinet on ebay for 50 or 60 bucks. about five years (of parts searching) and several - and I mean several - hundred dollars later, I ended up with a nice, complete machine that's become my primary player...

The ad says it was purchased from a woodworker who "loved it" - apparently in the same sort of way spousal abusers insist they "love" the person they regularly beat up.

And that mystery hole on the side, what in the heck could that have been for? Seems to be original, eh?
