Question on Reproducer Top Tinting

Folks,

Edison model H reproducers for combination outfit tops were tinted green so you could tell them from a model C reproducer. That is well documented as well as many, many examples exist. My question is was there ever any tinting or documentation supporting tinting on a model K reproducer? I recently saw one that was tinted a light red.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have owned several Ks and seen many more but have not seen any hint of color on them. However, I suppose anything is possible. Given that the K is a combination reproducer, I wouldn't think it would have been seen as necessary, as opposed to having 2 separate reproducers. I do think a red K would look nice on a maroon Gem.
While we are on this subject, what is the best way to recolor an H that is missing most of its color?

Jim

I have not seen any documentation and in my 40 years of collecting and repairing phonographs, many K reproducers have passed my hands. I have not seen any that were tinted or showed signs of tint.
That being said who knows what really happened a hundred years ago that has not been discovered yet.

It was nice seeing you at Union, thanks for the Hexaphone brush.

Best Regards, Larry

I found this on the Internet http://www.spotmodel.com/product_info.p ... s_id=17606 . Do you think that if you would paint something like this over the dome in a thin coat it would re-create the green tinted look? I'd be interested to hear if there is a way to re-tint these reproducers.

Red tint? Obviously just another Lenin-Tone soviet counterfeit.

The Reds are clearly coming back strong... We need some 'Murican reproducers to battle them!

About 5 grains of green aniline powder stain dissolved in a couple of teaspoons full of clear shellac will do the trick. I suspect this was the original way of coloring reproducer tops.
