I came across this at the Iola Old Car Show of all places. It was in a box of records and the only one worth picking out. I had one of these in the 7 inch size years ago and was talked out of it before I know any better. Does anyone know any more information on them? The title is "Remembrances of Scotland" record number 1479. I can't make out the band name.

These plaid labels were used both in the US & Canada for The Kilties Band recordings. Both in 7 & 10 inch. The Canadian ones (brown) seem to turn up less often. Not sure why. I think there are two or three recording of each size.

This is probably the Kilties Band of the 48th Highlanders Infantry Regiment. The Regiment was formed in Toronto in 1891 and the band in 1892. Both the Regiment and the band are still in existence.

Edison cylinder recordings of the band were on sale in the UK by 1904.

According to The Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings (Fagan and Moran, @1983), there were a total of 13 sides made by the Kilties' Band of Canada. U.S. issue numbers 1477, 1478, 1479, 1480, 1485, 1486, 1487, 1488 were made in 7" (plaid "Victor Record" label) and 10" (plaid "Monarch Record" label) sizes (all recorded in July of 1902) . While numbers 31059 through 31063, inclusive, were issued on 12" discs also recorded in 1902, I believe (I think these were made with stock black labels, although I'm not sure on this). Catalog numbers on Canadian issues varied from their U.S. counterparts. Their were also some G&T issues made. Most all of the songs recorded were done in several different takes, with only select takes issued. Some titles were made in all three sizes.

I have two of these "Tartan" label (Victor) Monarch Records in my collection. One 7-inch and one 10-inch, both by the Kilties Band. Years ago I posted a video on my YouTube channel here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al9pVpMUBCE...of my 10-inch Tartan label Monarch Record playing on one of my Victor III's. The Tartan label Monarchs are very hard to find indeed.

If anyone has any of these plaid labeled discs they'd be willing to let go of, they are amongst my most sought after records!

Per DAHR, your record was recorded on 7/16/1902. The band was "Regimental Band of the Gordon Highlanders, Belleville, Canada."
