I have a number of motors where this critical gear is stripped, the one on the spindle that engages the governor worm gear. Apart from this gear, the motors are perfect....

What to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I usually manage to find someone with a NOS replacement part.

Where do you look or advertise for that?

It seems wasteful to have to purchase a whole donor motor for this single part.

I have this part.... Complete good one is $ 65.00 postage paid.

These were a fiber gear, and after many years wore out.

The gear pictured is from "Motor of Quality." My first impression was that the gear was brass, but poking at it with a screwdriver it does indeed appear to be some composite.

Is the part you are quoting mounted up on its spindle? And, do you have two of them?

I'm quite persuaded that some gears were made intentionally that way. An example here, at bottom:

The motor runs perfectly and the problem turned out to be elsewhere (as described in the thread). Actually, it would have been impossible to mount a "flat" gear: there wouldn't have been backlash enough towards the wormgear.

That gear was not made that way and neither was yours. In your case, it's not just totally worn out yet so it still works for you.

Is the gear pressed on the shaft or does it have a brass core? I have a few of these around but I will need find them and see if they are the same as yours. I also have at least one complete motor (General Industries) in good condition, but you would need to be able to do a swap as the parts are not identical to yours. I'll check things out and PM you.

That gear was not made that way and neither was yours. In your case, it's not just totally worn out yet so it still works for you.

Jerry, should "my" gear be flat and not concave in the way you see it, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to set it against its respective wormgear. The eccentric bearings have such an adjustment range that the gear would protrude over the wormgear, should it be "flat".

Of course this doesn't tell anything about a different motor/machine. I am just saying that the work on the field has persuaded me that in some cases that shape was intentional.

This type of wear is common for that gear arrangement even in non-phonograph applications. I'd also suggest swapping out the "worm gear" as well since it's probably become a cutting tool after years of use.

I'd suggest contacting one of the many used part dealers to try to get both parts for each motor you want to repair.

As an example (not exactly the same as phono, but you get the point)...
