Why Are So Many Edison Hinge Blocks Broken?

I just repaired another broken hinge block on a Model C reproducer. I have no idea how many I have seen that were torn from the body. It puzzles me how this happens, since I have used them for many years and never broke one. Have any of you ever accidently broken one? I am at a loss to explain why so many are damaged!

My guess is from droppage.

Because they are tiny and people try to tighten them too much would be my guess.

people think they can get it one more time around instead of turning it back when it starts to feel tight.

Guilty. I've broken one in a Model H reproducer when I was a kid. The reproducer wasn't held tight in the mounting...because I hadn't tightened the screw...and I bumped the horn. The reproducer hit the floor and the hinge block sheared off quite neatly.

In those
very pre-internet days it was far easier to get another reproducer than it was to find another hinge block.

Guilty, I dropped a Model O on a stone tile floor. Broke the hinge block and bent the wire guide on the other end of the weight....
