A wood working friend wants to make a cabinet similar to a Herzog #724 for me and I would like to know the measurements of an original. Any photos of mechanism that opens both doors at the same time too. Does anyone know the measurements. Height, diameter etc. etc. and if possible in feet and inches. ha ha

We've never denied anyone permission to use images from our books, as long as they mention the title. In this case, the image is from Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos, & Gimmicks. Don't be afraid to ask permission in the future. :)

I see that you were the co-author of that book. I did not notice that and seem to forget to mention books when I use photos from them. I guess I just assume everyone knows it is from a book and know it is not mine as I have never authored a book. Sorry about that I forgot to give the book credit.

It's no big deal - at least in this instance.

It's not a question of people thinking you're taking credit for the image, although that happens sometimes.

Years ago we had a Korean collector take photos of 22 pages of our first book and put them into "his" book that he published in quantity and offered for sale. A Chinese company took photos from our advertising book and offered metal plaques with beautiful Edison poster images on them. In both those instances, attorneys stepped in and threatened action. But those were commercial enterprises stealing the intellectual property of others. On this forum, it's really only a matter of courtesy. Happily, most everyone (on this forum at least) understands this concept.

The bottom line is that copyrighted material (not just mine) may not be legally reproduced in any form without the consent of the copyright holder. (This includes articles & images from The Antique Phonograph quarterly journal.) Again, it's no big deal here, but I'd hate to see the practice of freely lifting copyrighted material performed willy-nilly and some people getting the wrong idea.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just good manners to ask permission and (when permission is granted) simply mention the source. :)

In short, it's called plagiarism. About your friend building that cabinet, I want say he can't, but it would be a tremendous undertaking. I had a good friend that owned a furniture plant take one of my half barreled Herzogs apart and build me 50 of them. They knew what they were doing and it was still a big task. In the old days, the curve of the doors were done with 6 or 7 pieces of wood, cut at different angles to get the shape. Today that would be done with resin and many pieces glued together to get that shape. Here is one of mine that Raphael has for sell.
Thanks to Raphael for the picture.

Well nice cabinet there. Now how many shelves in this cabinet? What are the dimensions of that cabinet? How tall, deep and wide is it. Are these cabinets 36 inches tall or 48 or what? I think my friend can do a good job of it even if not exactly like a Herzog. See his little box he made for me.

As to the height and width, they were exactly as the old ones. I had 30 cylinder and 20 disk, some of those in Mahogany. The problem you will have is the curves on the doors. Well, I should say that was the biggest problem for me.

I stopped at a friend's house today and took some basic measurements of his Herzog 724.

The diameter is 22 ¼" measured at the top. The main body will of course be slightly less.

The cabinet is 36 ½" tall WITHOUT FEET. The bun feet are 2" tall.

The main body of the cabinet (between the big circular pieces that form the top and bottom) is 33" tall.

I hope this helps. :)
