I recently got the Lyric reproducer for my BF back from Steve Medved, and it sounds much better.

Of course, as the Fates decree, I immediately had trouble with the governor, which refused to stay in balance. After a great deal of tinkering and cursing, I had the motor running fairly smoothly again (for now, at least). There's still some flutter, though: I may have to replace the springs and weights.

Hi Bill, I feel your pain, believe me, with regard to the annoying flutter. A few months ago when I was confronted with flutter on one of my Columbia BF's I ordered 3 new governor weights and springs from Ron Sitko and installed them. It made no difference regarding the flutter. So, I cleaned off all the old white corrosion commonly seen on old, original Columbia lead weights and bought a small digital scale from Harbor Freight (maybe $14.99?) and weighed all of the original weights individually making sure they were exactly the same weight. I installed the new governor springs on each of the (now clean and consistent) old weights. It helped a lot but then I noticed that the friction disc was not rotating perfectly true and that is where I'm presuming the last little bit of flutter is coming from. Once you have the governor weights and friction disc rotating true at normal playing speed I can guarantee that your flutter will disappear. This, of course, is presuming that your belt is fine and all else in the drive train is in smooth operating condition. Watch the governor closely as it rotates from a dead stop to normal play speed using a good flashlight or other light and keep an eye on the friction disc. If it's wobbling even a little bit that may be your culprit.
