It would appear that the mis-spelling of the word GRAMOPHONE is as old as the industry :

A pal of mine recently snagged a very nice flat-top Pooley VTLA for less than 300 smackers, locally, with no competition from me. How? It was listed on craigslist as a "grammaphone"!

I think that the use of 'a' in place of where we usually put an 'o' may have just been an acceptable alternative back then. For instance, I have a Blue Amberol wherein the genre is listed as a 'saxaphone solo' on the record edge.

Alternative, yes. Acceptable, no. The correct form since the beginning has always been "saxophone" with an "o". (Actually, two "o"s.)
