I was asked in this thread ( http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... &start=170 ) to share the titles of the "better records" that came with Schubert No.5451. The term "better records" is entirely subjective of course, and there were 36 records in the group. Unfortunately, there was nothing later than 52285, but here is a list of the twenty 52000-series records in no particular order:

52072: Don Voorhees & His Orch.: Oh! Doris! Where Do You Live?/Green Bros.: Say It With A Red Red Rose
52141: J. Donald Parker: The Song Is Ended/Together We Two
52200: The Happiness Boys: Poor Lizzie/Henry's Made A Lady Out Of Lizzie
52174: Vernon Dalhart: My Carolina Home/O! Dem Golden Slippers
52029: Vernon Dalhart: Lucky Lindy/Lindbergh
52183: Arthur Fields: Flaming Ruth/The Rollickers: Wait A Little Longer, Love Bird
52285: The Ponce Sisters: In The Evening/Beloved
52263: Charles Harrison: Mother (Who Can Be Sweeter Than You?)/Silver Haired Sweetheart
52283: Arthur Fields: Well, The Irish and The Germans Got Together/They Landed Over Here From Over There
52273: Piccadilly Players: That's What I Call Keen/Oreste & His Queensland Orch: Lila
52093: Vaughn De Leath: Someday You'll Say O.K.!/There's a Cradle in Caroline
52086: Al. Lynn's Music Masters: Me And My Shadow/At Sundown
52096: The Radio Franks: Mister Aeroplane Man/J. Donald Parker: Dawning
52212: Vaughn De Leath: Rambler Roses Ramble/There Must Be A Silver Lining
52150: The Rollickers: I'm In Heaven When I See You Smile Diane/Charles Harrison: Among My Souvenirs
52192: Vaughn De Leath: My Blue Heaven/Keep Sweeping The Cobwebs Off The Moon
52262: Charles Harrison: Macushla/Mother Machree
52148: Al. Lynn's Music Masters: I'm Telling The World (That I Love You)/Irwin Abrams & Orch: Dream Kisses
52032: Duke Yellman & Orch.: My Regular Gal/B.A. Rolfe & Palais D'Or Orch.: Down In The Old Neighborhood
52229: Vernon Dalhart: A Memory That Time Cannot Erase/Old Plantation Melody

There were also some dance numbers from the late 51,000 series by Kaplan's Melodists, Stevens' Quartet, Charlie Kerr's Orch., Georgia Melodians, and the Broadway Dance Orchestra. Some Vernon Dalhart chestnuts like The Wreck of the Shenandoah/The Wreck of the 1256; The Death of Floyd Collins/The John T. Scopes Trial; The Letter Edged in Black/The Dream of the Miner's Child. Also The Tennessee Happy Boys I Miss My Swiss/Just A Little Drink.

George, thanks for producing this list; it's a valuable and unique document.

I had a couple instances over the years where I purchased a phonograph that came with what was clearly its initial cache of records. The first was a 1919 Chippendale (a very late C-250) with many of the records from 1919 and most of the rest dating no later than 1922. The second was a 1926 VV-40 with quite a few Helen Kane records!

Yes, I second that George! I recognize many titles that I have and some I wish I had, like Mr. Aeroplane Man. It's always historically interesting to see what records came with an original, unmolested phonograph that remained in the original family. The fact that it didn't come with any record later than 52285 may mean something. That would be June of 1928. that would probably date the phonograph to about that time also, I would think. With the serial no. of 5451, it would be a fairly late production Schubert. Perhaps she was satisfied with the records she had, or just couldn't afford to buy any more records during the next 13 or 14 months when production of Diamond Discs ceased.
