This looked really awesome, but I don't have $7,000.00 to spend. :(

That's a replica from the 1980s or so. Actually, not really a replica since the cabinet is a fanciful creation that is not the same as the original. The coin parts for a Manhattan were replicated, though not precisely.

This one doesn't even have a 'suitcase' Standard mechanism -- note the angled endgate and brass/black patent plate of an 'A'. There are many details that are incorrect when compared to the real thing.

A photo for posterity, since the eBay ad will eventually disappear.

"We have no doubts about originality, but why don't you come and check it yourself, or send a friend who is knowledgable to inspect this wonderful machine? Beste Grüße/Best regards, AUCTION TEAM BREKER, Cologne/Germany"

Now really, that auction company ought to know better.

The Breker auction house is one of the two in Europe that regularly (annually) auctions gramophones and phonographs. They really focus on automatons, though, and talking machines take a supporting role in the auction. In the past they sold high-end machines like Idelias and tin-foils. I bought one from them about three years ago - not an Idelia, but a German dual tonearm gramophone, in its original condition, but I saw others that were clearly tampered with - evidence that their experts need new glasses. In the last two years the auctions had practically no gramophones of any interest, which is kind of sad. The coinop on EBay is probably a leftover from one of them (I admit I did not notice it, coinop phonographs are not my area of interest - coinop gramophones, yes). The automatons, however, were something else: amazing pieces of all sizes and movements, in an ambiance that vaguely resembled the Blade Runner's JF Sebastian's house...

Even if you got it at the opening bid ($7500) there is still the auction premium, taxes and shipping costs to factor in, pushing it up over the $10k range (for starters).

I've never bought anything at Breker's, but know people who have, and the common thread among their comments is that it is absolutely essential to eyeball the stuff in person before bidding.

Yea, I would not consider doing that at all.

Every phonograph that I own I bought from an antique mall, or a trade show. I prefer to look at them in person.

I would rather see it in person like you said, Raphael!
