Oh, how I wanted that Golden Gate Orchestra record. The bid was at $30. and in the last 5 seconds I bid $32. The winner paid $94! Astounding to me that so many bidders (5) wanted that record so much that the price would jump that fast. I suppose that I should give up on Ebay auctions and enjoy the diamond disk records I own already. I bought my phonographs to help me relax. To quote Eli Wallach in the movie -How to Steal a Million, "I've never been more relaxed in my whole life"

It's one of my favorite Edison records - both sides are well-recorded and hot numbers. I often use "Sweet Man" as a demo of how far the acoustic recording and playback technology progressed...the first, sustained, note of the cornet solo is amazing and even more remarkable when one considers that there's no electricity involved.
The drummer on Brown Eyes, Why Are You Blue is pretty funky for his day, too, with some great high-hat action.
Both sides are worth seeking out on youtube or elsewhere...real nice stuff.

Keep looking for it - a copy sold in Dec for only $3.25 ! (not a perfect copy, as the $94 appeared to be, but not bad)

I have a copy of this in my C-250.It's one of my favorites.I'd play it for someone who thinks Edison had no jazz.I'd prove 'em wrong!
