Serial Ranges of DD Reproducers

I noted the recent sale of an early DD reproducer Here, and it raised a question for me.
The serial number for said reproducer was A73580. My A-80 (SN 1865) has a reproducer numbered A12082, but which has a later style weight, with the cast lugs.
Could the Company ( or Edison dealers ) have updated the weights on older, unsold machines?
I bought the A-80 from the grandson of the original owners, who were fairly new immigrants. The records with it were all etched labels, no earlier than 1914 / 15: there were traces of old grille cloth, which would not originally have been used on such an early
machine.
Was this perhaps a "dressing-up" of surplus stock?
