When I recorded the Grateful Dead, in 2003, Mickey Hart, the percussionist, had sent me on a quest, and I have not forgot the quest, and I am still looking. "The first field recordings of Native American music contain Passamaquoddy songs, tales, and vocabulary, sung and spoken by Noel Josephs and Peter Selmore, as recorded by Jesse Walter Fewkes (1850-1930) at Calais, Maine, in mid-March 1890. What I understand is the machine was a treadle Edison Phonograph. I understand there is only 2 known examples, correct? It is probably wise to say the machine will never be found, but I am still looking, and this is for the Smithsonian. I imagine the phonograph would have been leased through Mary Hemingway, of NAPC I am going to look over the financial records, and maybe there is mention either there or in the minutes of NAPC about this. It would be nice to solve this mystery.

My boy Peter Dilg may know. Send me a private message for his number. He's not a computer guy.

Well, in the brown-wax period there WERE both treadle and water-motor powered machines, in addition to the "M" and Spring Motor.
