UK members, and no doubt members elsewhere, will be sad to hear that Philip passed away suddenly on 20th February 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. When I visited him only last Tuesday I little knew that it would be our final meeting.

Although his professional background was in radio, for some 30 years Philip ran a shop in Wellington, Somerset dealing in records and machines. He was also a skilled repairer, as several of my machines bear witness.

Frank Andrews, Richard Taylor, Tom Little and now Philip Knighton. The last few months have not been kind to the UK gramophone community.

Our thoughts are with Vivienne and the family at this sad time.

Thanks for letting us know, Roger. That is really very sad and as you say, we have lost quite a few of our gramophone/phonograph stalwarts in the last 12 months.

Thats sad news. He repaired a few radios for me in the past . Someone told me months ago that he had died ....!

The funeral will take place at Taunton Deane Crematorium on Wednesday 16 March at 1.30pm. The family intend the occasion to be a celebration of Philip's life, and request that only bright casual clothing be worn.

It is very sad news as he has been a friend of mine for many years. I was very touched when Viv sent me an email shortly after he died to tell me and I sent a long reply telling her how valued his friendship was to me. He was a very genuine and caring person and nothing was too much trouble and he was also deeply involved in the community in which he lived. I will miss my visits to Wellington to see him each time we visit the UK and he has certainly been in my thoughts today especially as I am unable to attend the funeral. I am sure there will be many people attending who have know him over the years.

It was standing room only at the funeral yesterday, which was a touching and uplifting celebration of Philip's life. Those attending wore bright clothing at the family's request, and the social gathering afterwards was a happy affair accompanied of course by music at 78rpm played on an HMV102 portable.

Philip was taken from us far too soon, and I miss him more than I can say.

I understand your sorrow. I have belonged to a local antique radio club for 30+ years. We meet at least once a month and get to know each other pretty well. Half of the old geezers have died off and there are far fewer "youngsters" coming along to replace them. It's rather depressing to lose your friends and see the hobby fade away.
