£2300
Looks like the horn has been repaired.
When did they transition from Mica to aluminium diaphragms? Is the EMG logo hiding behind from aluminium diaphragms? Were they retrofitted?
Cheers,
David.

does that seem high? I thought these machines typically sold for quite a bit.

My vague impression is that Mk VIIIs and Mk IXs are around similar monetary value. VIIIs seem to be considerably rarer but are more difficult to live with due to the shape! I have heard of Mk VIIIs changing hands for up to £3500 or so.
Evidently this one's horn doesn't support itself fully, judging by the added support. The early ones had a much shorter effective length of the spigot and socket which seems almost to defy the laws of physics.
I shall have to re-read Frank James's book to see whether it indicates when the aluminium diaphragms started. I was re-reading Joe Ginn's book recently but that doesn't pin-point a date. Both of my small, modified-Exhibition style EMG Mk VIII soundboxes have aluminium diaphragms and one of them has "EMG" engraved behind, but either or both may have started life with mica diaphragms.
