Recommendations for Bedplate striping technique

What's your preferred method for striping bedplates? Do you paint it on, and if so, how? Or do you use decals? I have a 1905 wood cased Edison Shaving Machine (more about that in a later post), that has needed a complete repaint, so I have the striping to do...

Which style of shaver do you have the one with the side drawer or the one with the front door? Here are pictures of both. My side drawer has the electric motor upgrade. All of the cases have the slot in the rear where the belts pass through. Could you post pictures of yours.

Rich, this is the one that I've been communicating with you about (pulley dimensions, decal pics, and case front sizes)... It's all in pieces right now, so there isn't much in terms of pictures to post, but mine is the bottom one with the hinged front.

BTW, do you know what the purpose for the small angle bracket next to the lid lock is for?

I've used "CitriStrip" with great success on various paints/finishes. It won't run you out of the room when you use it which is a plus in my book.

I think Benjamin is talking about painting stripes, not looking for a way to strip the paint.

See "The Compleat Talking Machine" by Eric Reiss. He devotes several pages to stripping, refinishing and striping. I can't personally say whether your machine would have been hand striped or use decals.

This is an old topic, and I've since purchased the decals from Gregg Cline, which are great. However, I would like to know where you can purchase the "engineers pen" as described in Eric Reiss's book; I haven't been able to find it any where.

I believe they were still using hand striping in 1905: the decals did not come in until a few years later.
