Oak VV-XIV languishing in Northern NJ

Post by Cody K »

I don't think this has been posted here before, but it seems to have been listed on CL two months ago, so if it's not one of those cases where it's been sold but the sellers haven't bothered to remove the ad, who knows, some forum member who's nearby might be able to strike a deal. Wonderful grain, looks like it would clean up well.

Thats actually and XVI, I think. You can tell because the reproducer and tone arm are gold plated and the cabinet, while similar to the XIV, is not quite the same.

I thought that too, Steve, but decided it was just that the yellowish incandescent light was making it look gold. The knobs on the doors seem to be nickeled, and on closer inspection I guessed that the deck accoutrements are too. I could be wrong though, in which case it would be an even more interesting find. I still regret (a little) not copping an oak XVI that was for sale in Lynn, Mass., a couple of years ago.

[On edit:]Went back and looked at the ad again, and I really can't tell. It doesn't actually look like incandescent light, but maybe natural light. Whatever it is, it's pretty bright. The taper-tube doesn't look very gold at all, but the soundbox and hinge sure look yellow.

Hey, maybe we can ask the internet and go viral with this: Is it brown and silver, or brown and gold? That always goes well!

Yeesh -- just realized I didn't furnish a link in the original post: https://newjersey.craigslist.org/ele/5411891838.html

And while I'm at it, here's the pic of the taper tube:

This really is like that darn dress: looking at it I can't decide whether it's gold or nickel. I'm sitting in a room with three machines with gold-plate, and this doesn't look like those...and yet...it's yella! Probably some jamoke rubbed 97% of the gold off the taper-tube, is all. If it is a XVI, somebody really oughta look into it. Could be a score, if it's been on CL for two months after that amount of time they may take any offer that comes in. Or they may be all "No, we saw this exact same thing on eBay for $1800, so get outta here"... you never know.

I also couldn't tell it what it was at first either. However the XIV of this period had a keyhole above the album doors and the XVI did not. This is definitely an XVI because it does not have that keyhole

I sent the seller two messages and have not heard back from him yet. If I do I will post his reply.

I spoke to him a few weeks back. If I remember correctly he was asking $350. I have to finish a few projects before I can add another at the present time. Let us know how it goes.

Just heard back from him. He said he would take $275.00. Pretty good price.

The machine is a VV-XVI SN101466 G. Here is a picture of the ID tag.
