Hello everybody,

Can I get more information on this Gramophone?

In the book of Daniel Marty, "Histoire illustrée du phonographe (Illustrated History of the Phonograph)" on page 43 (see the photo), he is named "Gramophone Monarque N° 13 (Gramophone Monarch No. 13)", but I can't find any other information about it.

Can you help me?

PS) The felt lack on the board, and the crank, the rear rod and the bottom of the box. The triple engine works perfectly. According to you, what would be its current price in the state?

This is an English Senior Monarch manufactured up to around 1910.

The price will be affected by the missing piece at the back which is problematic to reproduce.

that is a very nice gramophone that has fallen on hard times.i would restore it,or keep it to an empty case came along.apart from the case all the individual parts look in very good condition and dare i say it is worth more in parts than as a whole gramophone.i estimate the parts between £1000-£1500 [$1400-$2000]possibly more

I would absolutely NOT part this out, as suggested. Eventually, to you or to whomever you sell it to, a "parts" cabinet will come available to harvest a molding piece from. Aside from the missing molding, this is a very nice phonograph.

Given the depressed market at the moment : for example a Mahogany Monarch in very good condition, with a very desirable red HMV horn barely cleared £500 this week in the UK, the estimate given may raise unfulfillable expectations.

Wouldn't it be possible to make a rubber mold from the front trim and then cast a replica for the rear? A replica would not fool an expert, but it would look better than trim missing altogether.

That is probably the best way to go: make a cast in epoxy resin, glue it to a plain wood moulding, and carefully paint it to match. This will serve well, until such time as you can locate an original moulding.

That is definitely wort restoring as it is as only the back moulding is missing .

What I would personally find acceptable and an honest repair especially as its the back is to get a moulding of Identical shape made up and fitted. Its not that difficult for the skilled woodworker and could be done with hand planes . The embossed decoration would be absent of course , but an honest repair .

Quoting individual prices for machines can be very misleading in itself and certainly not indicative of the market as a whole. To quote another example, an HMV mahogany Intermediate Monarch base without any horn has just fetched £650 alone. Neither the cabinet or the metalwork was in particularly good condition, with the shellac very crazed and dull (as is quite typical of these) and the plating very rough and peeling in places. I recently bought the same identical model in mahogany in great condition complete with wooden horn. Both the cabinet finish and the plating was all complete and near immaculate. I paid just £350 more! What this demonstrates to me is how uneven the prices are. It all depends on what day of the week it is, who's looking and how much anyone is prepared to pay that day. There is absolutely no reliable yardstick with which to gauge current prices. They are predictably all over the place.
