I used to know some folks that had an Amberola 75 that had that happen to it. They kept magazines in what was left of it and put the lid back on the thing after they cut it down. Her husband probably read a "Popular Mechanics" issue back in the 1950's that told how to do it. Those "Woman's Day" magazines during WWII kept a lot of bored housewives busy chopping up old furniture as well. They would go especially crazy on pump organs and combination bookcase/desks!
