Hiya folks,

I thought I should post a few "new" pictures of my progress (such as it is) after two days that involved complete disassembly, and vigorous cleaning -- using an entire container of "goop", two rolls of paper towels, and several rags. Once I have the replacement doors and a few other missing parts, I'll update my images, for posterity. A few unexpected bonuses were found behind the dividers in the record storage compartment:

2 - 12" LP, and 4 - 10" LP sleeves in very nice condition -- now I have a sleeve for the single 12" LP (#30,001) I bought months ago in anticipation of an LP Console or conversion for my C 19. An "Astatic" brand dual-purpose replacement stylus -- unfortunately not the one I need for my Newcomb "EDT" Solid State portable electric phonograph. A cracked Little Wonder record (#77) A Little Tot's Nursery Tunes record (#107) As it stands right now, the finish is in terrible condition, but the veneer is relatively decent and stable; meaning that it hasn't separated from the core wood yet. At this time, I'm not considering a complete stripping and refinishing, but I can't see the future, so; "hey, ya never know."

Fran, Congrats on buying the 1-C console. I always liked the 1-C with the dual grilles even though it has the smallest horn. Did you say you have the dual grilles coming? Also, I sure could use those LP record sleeves. They are rare. I've never even seen a 12" one before. Does your 1-C have any mold or mildew? Did it come from a damp environment? If it has a foul smell, you would have to take some mold removing measures. But you certainly have it looking good now! Great job! Do you have the LP reproducer also? Marc.

Wow, Fran! That cleaned up much nicer than I would have guessed. I'd like to see more on this as you progress.

Is the finish badly alligatored ? What type of wood is it, curious.....

Thanks Martin. I'm a little surprised, too, but the finish is much worse in places than I show in the pictures. It seemed like I could have used a second canister of hand cleaner and two more rolls of paper towels, but after hours and hours, I just had to stop.

I might try some various "quick-fix" sort of options on the finish, like paste wax, just to see how much I can improve things. I'll definitely keep the thread updated as it develops.

Yes, it's very alligatored; it has permanent damage from mold growth, a little white paint here and there, and worse (in places); the finish had been dissolved from coming in contact with some sort of liquid, and then it had re-congealed into a bumpy, ugly mess.

As long as it's not in bright light, it doesn't appear too bad, and it plays perfectly, so:

Yes Marc, I have the doors/panels coming. It's funny that Edison co. would have put a mute ball in such a small horn! And also, because of using their stock cable supporting bracket, the ball barely clears the horn opening. It still sounds pretty decent (loud enough), though, despite of the engineering faux pas.

I'm retaining the sleeves for future records, sorry.

It did live in a damp environment at some point, and I've dealt with the problem of mold in the past (my in-laws house had sadly, after years of neglect and poor drainage, been heavily inoculated with black mold and needed remediation). There is quite a bit of mold damage to the finish, especially on the rear of the cabinet. The GOOP hand cleaner did remediate the stench a little, hopefully over time the odor will go away enough so that I no longer sense it (I'm a "super-sniffer/taster" and any objectionable odor -- no matter how minute -- drives me absolutely nuts).

It came with the appropriate LP reproducer and "Edisonic" reproducer (square-weight type).

These are the machines I love to buy!

By tearing down everything and learning to put it back to gather, you learn a lot about how the machine works, and it can keep you busy for quite a while! ( a couple years if you let it )

I have a couple machines in this similar condition that I am working on, and they are almost done. I am very surprised at how well it is looking after just the GOOP.

The 1-C looks like a great project. Saving unwashed and unloved machines from the land fill is truly a worthy endeavor. The top looks like it will require the most work. The hard part is going to be preserving the original finish where possible and matching a new finish where is is unavoidable. Well worth the effort, especially with a working phonograph.
