Looks like it needs a total restoration! The soundbox is one from a late Orthophonic portable and will most likely be in good condition! Really nice price for a summer project!!

Also I believe that the tonearm mount is upside down?

Technically, yes, but not really. It is the early 1930's Orthophonic soundbox, after RCA bought out Victor. It says "RCA Victor" on the back, and would normally go on an RCA Victor 2-65. The name is the only difference, it still fits all Orthophonic machines, and retains all but one of the normal Orthophonic characteristics. It may not have a spider on the diaphragm.

Interestingly I have one of these and the pot metal on them is usually always stable enough to do a full rebuild. It also may be so late as to not have the spider (which was a modification on the latest Orthophonic reproducers to increase treble response).

The biggest difference (generally) between the regular # 5 orthophonic sound box and the one used on the portables ( 5 B ?) is the addition of that brass cover, with the screen and a felt mute underneath.

Remove the four screws and this cover, and you're looking at a regular pot-metal Orthophonic.

The tear-drop bearing covers were eliminated and are replaced by integral "ear-flaps" that are part of the outer cover on the portable version.

The "Wrong-ness" for a cabinet machine is mostly cosmetic; it should play pretty much the same as a standard "indoor" pot-metal Orthophonic sound box, conditions being equal.

Still at that price it's worth a little work..
