What is this labels? It looks hand written and [factory] stamped...

The original paper label has come off, this is what's underneath it.

Appears to have the word "Discarded" stamped on it, which indicates it was a factory reject that never had a label. I've heard that the factory let employees take the rejects home. Somebody must have figured out the song and hand-wrote it in. Very cool to see one.

I have several DD's like this, but none that have "Discarded" stamped on them. I also have a couple of DD's like this without a serial number, and coupling two songs that were never coupled on the released DD. That means it is a factory test pressing. One of the songs is There's a Trick in Pickin' a Chick, Chick, Chicken handwritten on the label area.

I was always under the assumption that the labels had fallen off of examples like this one. I see the word "discarded" on this image now.

The book, Collector's Guide To Edison Records by George A. Copeland and Michael W. Sherman (pg. 40) backs up Marc's statement. They state "Most factory discards were due to problems with the labels, and not with the sound of the record.", and show examples.

I just received a copy of this great book from Mike yesterday.
